Household Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Sandwich participates in Lakes Region Planning Commission's (LRPC) household hazardous waste (HHW) collection program. This program offers FREE HHW collections on multiple dates/times and sites. For 2024 there are collections in June, July, August and September.

The Lakes Region Household Hazardous Product Facility (LRHHPF) also collects HHW, for a fee, at its Wolfeboro location.

These disposal programs differ in these ways:

  • LRPC conducts collections multiple days in the summer, is free but has a household limit, is open to residents and residential taxpayers only, and does not accept commercial waste.
  • LRHHPF is open every 3rd Saturday from May to October, charges a fee but allows unlimited amounts, and accepts commercial waste.

If you have items that are not accepted for either program, check the LRPC HHW website to see a list of other potential options to dispose of them.

LRPC Annual Household Hazardous Waste collection sites and dates:

The LRPC HHW days were originally held the last Saturday of July and first Saturday of August, from 8:30am – 12pm. Starting in 2024 there will be a collection day in June, as well as days in September, including the first weekday afternoon collection. To see specific dates please review the flyer below.

For most Sandwich households, the most convenient collection locations are in Meredith on July 27th  or in  Moultonborough on August 3rd.

These collection days only accept waste from residents and taxpayers, no commercial waste is accepted. There are no fees for this service, however there is a 10 gallon or 50 pound limit per household.

For more info contact David Jeffers at 603-279-5341, or visit the LRPC website: LRPC HHW website
Jim Humphrey, Sandwich's HHW Coordinator can also be contacted with questions via email at or by phone at: 508-633-0109

At each event:

  1. You will be asked to participate in a brief survey, which helps to improve collection efforts
  2. Keep materials in their original containers
  3. For speedy drop-off, place containers in a sturdy cardboard box in your trunk

Medical Waste Disposal

Many police departments (including Moultonborough's) have dropboxes for medicine disposal.

The Sandwich Police Department also participates in National Drug Take Back Days which occur on a semi-annual basis (usually in April and October).  The Police Department will advertise these collection days as they get closer.

LRHHPF is a storage facility where Sandwich residents and taxpayers pay to dispose of hazardous waste. There is no limit as to how much waste households may bring. The fee is $50 for each 0 - 5 gallon increment. The town of Sandwich has a small budget for reimbursing these expenses, so bring your receipt to the Selectmen's Office to be reimbursed up to $50.

Small businesses can make an appointment to dispose of commercial waste also.  See for latest info:
