Area Hiking Trails


 

ALGONQUIN TRAIL:  Sandwich Notch Road (6.7 Miles from Center). This trail goes to the summit of Sandwich Dome over steep ledges. Maintained by Squam Lakes Association.

ALICE BEMIS THOMPSON PRESERVE:  Route 113 - Beede Flats Road (4.8 Miles from Center). This is a short trail, mostly on a boardwalk, which overlooks a wetlands area with abundant wildlife. Maintained by the NH Audubon Society. 

BEARCAMP RIVER TRAIL:  Sandwich Notch Road (3.1 Miles from Center). This trail mostly follows the Bearcamp River for over eleven miles in Sandwich and continues on several miles through Tamworth to Route 25. 

BLACK MOUNTAIN POND TRAIL:  Sandwich Notch Road - on Guinea Pond Trail. This trail goes from the Guinea Pond trail, past Black Mountain Pond, to the Algonquin Trail.  Maintained by Squam Lakes Association.

CHAPMAN SANCTUARY/VISNY WOODS:  740 Mt. Israel Road (4 Miles from Center).  Nature walk on a network of wooded trails. Both for summer and winter use. Map at Kiosk.  Maintained by the Chapman Sanctuary/Visny Woods Directors.

CRAWFORD RIDGEPOLE TRAIL:  Sandwich Notch Road (1.4 Miles from Diamond Ledge Road). This trail follows the Squam Range along the ridge for 11.3 miles. Maintained by Squam Lakes Association.

DOUBLEHEAD TRAIL to Doublehead Mountain on the Squam Range; intersects with the Crawford-Ridgepole Trail (see above). Maintained by Squam Lakes Association.

EAGLE CLIFF TRAIL:  Squam Lake Road (3.2 Miles from Center heading toward Center Harbor, trailhead on left). Trail to summit of Red Hill, involves some scrambling over ledges. Maintained by Squam Lakes Association.

FLAT MOUNTAIN POND:  Whiteface Intervale Road (.3 Miles from Route 113A). This trail goes from Whiteface Intervale, past Flat Mountain Pond, to Bennett Street parking area.   Maintained by White Mountain National Forest.

GUINEA POND TRAIL:  Sandwich Notch Road (3.1 Miles from Diamond Ledge Road). This trail goes from Sandwich Notch Road to the Flat Mountain Pond Trail.

McCRILLIS PATH:  Whiteface Intervale Road (1 Mile from 113A). This trail goes from Whiteface Intervale Road to the Blueberry Ledge trail on Mt. Whiteface. Maintained by Wonalancet Outdoor Club.

McCRILLIS TRAIL:  Whiteface Intervale Kiosk. This trail ascends  Mt. Whiteface from the Flat Mountain Pond Trail. Maintained by the White Mountain National Forest.

MEAD TRAIL:  Sandwich Notch Road (5.4 Miles from Diamond Ledge Road). This trail goes from the summit of Mt. Israel to the Guinea Pond Trail. Maintained by Squam Lakes Association.

MOORHOUSE TRAIL:  Route 109 - Wentworth Hill Road (.3 Miles on left from Center - Kiosk/Marker at trailhead). Follows Red Hill River in village. Maintained by Lakes Region Conservation Trust.

RED HILL RIVER TRAIL:  Great Rock Road (1.6 Miles from Center). Woods walk near Red Hill River outside of village. Maintained by Lakes Region Conservation Trust.

RED HILL POND TRAIL:  North Sandwich Road (Route 113 - .3 Miles from Center on right).  A family-friendly 1 mile walk to the dam on Red Hill Pond. Maintained by the Town of Sandwich.

WENTWORTH TRAIL:  Diamond Ledge Road - Mead Base. (3 Miles from Center). This trail goes to the summit of Mt. Israel from Mead Base and is 2.2 miles in length. Maintained by Squam Lakes Association and US Forest Service.

WHITEFACE INTERVALE KIOSK:  Route 113A to Whiteface Intervale Road (.4 Miles from 113A). This area has a network of trails with a Kiosk at the parking area displaying a map.  US Forest Service.
